Carnot, Marie-François-Sadi
(1837-1894)
   statesman
The son of lazare-hippolyte carnot, Marie-François-Sadi Carnot was born in Limoges and educated in Paris at the École polytechnique. He served as engineer in charge of bridges and roads and, after the fall of the second empire (September 14, 1870), was made prefect of what is now the department of Seine-Maritime, and was elected to the National Assembly (1871). Twice a minister (public works, 1879-80; finance, 1885-86), he then became president of the republic (1887). The beginning of his tenure was marked by the Boulangist agitation, then by the rallying of various Catholics to the republican government (1890), and finally by the panama affair (1892). Because of legislation passed during his term against anarchism and syndicalism, he was assassinated by an italian anarchist while visiting an exposition at lyon.
